Ectropy
Conceptual Design Exercise
Created during my semester at RISD, Ectropy is a print design piece that tells a story as it is unfolded. It's content is an excerpt from “Einstein’s Dreams” by Alan Lightman, which describes a world where ectropy, or the increase in order over time, is the dominant tendency.
As the paper is unfolded, the content becomes more and more rational and orderly, until at last the organizing principle behind the folding system is evident.
From the text:
In this world, the passage of time brings increasing order. Order is the law of nature, the universal trend, the cosmic direction. If time is an arrow, that arrow points toward order. The future is pattern, organization, union, intensification; the past, randomness, confusion, disintegration, dissipation.
